Just like we need to assess reading at higher levels , we need to assess writing at higher levels. We need to see how students are applying their spelling and use of language constructs in their writing. There are several tests you can use to get an idea of written content and grammar usage.

Dyslexia Testing and Assessment

The first community app for parents and caregivers of children who learn and think differently. If testing shows dyslexia, your child may be eligible for dyslexia accommodations. When it comes to dyslexia tests, there is more than one test that can measure each skill. The exact test used will depend on the person doing the evaluation.

After evaluation, the school team will consider the case history and the testing data and will determine eligibility for Special Education services under IDEA . Data and evaluation results should be shared with parents throughout this process. For students with diagnosed SLD and dyslexia, the plan is typically an Individualized Education Plan , which provides both remediation and accommodations. Independent (i.e., private) schools are not required to follow IDEA; therefore, they can decide if and how they are able to remediate and accommodate students with learning differences. In Sam’s case, the team would expect scores at or below the 25th percentile on measures of letter-sound knowledge, decoding, reading fluency, or spelling.

In order to provide services through our Lexercise online platform or through one of our free screening evaluations or questionnaires, we will ask you to provide certain information, which may include personal information about your child. Academic problems don’t necessarily mean a person with dyslexia can’t succeed. Capable students with dyslexia can be highly successful given the right resources. Many people with dyslexia are creative and bright and may be gifted in math, science or the arts. If you suspect that your child has dyslexia, talk to your child’s health care provider. If available, tutoring sessions with a reading specialist can be helpful for many children with dyslexia.

What parents can do

Retellings require a student to read a text and then orally tell about what was just read, usually with some sort of coding system for scoring the quality of the retelling. Figure 1 shows how Monica, along with other members of the eligibility team, might proceed through the eligibility process with Sam. The process, as outlined in Figure 1 (adapted from Flanagan et al., 2002; Flanagan, Ortiz, Alfonso, & Mascolo, 2006), is designed to address many of the SLD eligibility criteria. The New Jersey Dyslexia Handbook contains useful information including a “potential indicators of dyslexia checklist”.

Received at school, home, or through tutoring, as well as the student’s response to the intervention. A history of poor attendance, alone, can explain an identified weakness in skill development. Untimed tests of real and nonsense word reading provide information as to whether the student has requisite word-reading accuracy. Untimed tests of nonword or nonsense word reading assess knowledge about the letter–sound correspondences of English . The language used in schools comes from federal and state educational laws. Laws define the criteria under which students have a guaranteed right to services.

This guidance is intended to assist school-based decision-making teams in making appropriate educational programming decisions for students with dyslexia. It can also serve as a starting point when additional resources are needed to support students. A number of professionals have the training and experience to evaluate children, or oversee an evaluation, for dyslexia. They include psychologists , developmental-behavioral pediatricians, child neurologists, reading specialists and, especially in very young children, speech pathologists. Evaluations can be expensive; the Scottish Rite Children’s Dyslexia Centers often evaluate children for dyslexia on a sliding scale of fees. Make sure that the evaluator is comfortable using the word “dyslexia” and will state the word in the diagnosis.

Many schools implement a multitiered-system-of-supports model, such as RTI. Although there is 讀寫障礙評估 to implement RTI, typically three or four tiers are provided with increasing levels of intervention (Arden & Pentimonti, 2017). Sam’s mother decided to contact Monica and ask if the school would evaluate him for dyslexia. Monica knew that the official eligibility category under IDEA was Specific Learning Disability , but she was not sure if she was allowed to use the term dyslexia or if the process of identification was somehow different for dyslexia.
